New Details Emerge About Upcoming Open-World Game, 'Star Wars Outlaws'
Massive Games, the creator of the upcoming Star Wars Outlaws, recently dished some about the many exciting and unique aspects of the game, which is due to be released on August 30. The game is set in the gap year between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, ironically the timeframe that the 1996 Legends multimedia project, Shadows of The Empire, was set in, and features a budding scoundrel named Kay Vess (voiced by Humberly Gonzalez) navigating through the seedy underbelly of the galaxy, putting Vess in regular contact with (and in the crosshairs) of various criminal organizations such as the Hutts, Pykes (The Clone Wars, The Book of Boba Fett), and a new one called the Ashiga Clan. The storyline will also interact with Maul and Q’ira’s organization, Crimson Dawn, first introduced in 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story, and featured in numerous comics since then.
Vess will find herself accepting missions from various criminal organizations and building a “reputation” with each organization, which will either reward Vess or mark you for death. Vess will also have to navigate around the ever-threatening presence of the Galactic Empire, which is very powerful at this point and will pursue you with varying levels of intensity depending on your criminal activity (think police in Grand Theft Auto). The game will also feature several familiar settings, including some established by the Original Trilogy such as Tatooine, the Sequel Trilogy such as Canto Bight (where Vess is from) and Kijimi (The Rise of Skywalker), some from the Expanded Universe such as Akiva (from the Aftermath book series), and new ones created specifically for the game such the Moon of Toshara.

Of course, it would not be Star Wars if it did not feature some droids. Outlaws features newly created droids such as Nix, inspired by Armadillos and the Massive team’s pet dogs and voiced by Dee Bradley Baker, who is certainly no stranger to Star Wars fans. It also features a Clone Wars-era Commando Droid (ND-5), voiced by Jay Rincon, which is wrestling with its past during the Clone Wars. Space travel is also a fleshed-out part of the game, with Vess able to seamlessly travel from planet to planet and even dock with space stations to seek jobs, engage in smuggling operations, contract gigs, and even combat missions. The creators have teased a mix of new characters in the game and some familiar ones but they are not saying exactly who Vess might encounter out there in a galaxy far, far away.
Star Wars Outlaws will be distributed by Ubisoft on August 30, 2024, and will be available on multiple platforms including Windows, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. We will follow its release with great interest.
