Mortal Kombat fans are seeing a new era begin as NetherRealm Studios creates a new ‘Invasion’ mode for Mortal Kombat 1, such as Kameo fighters for combat and single-player modes. Users can decide between their combatant and a Kameo for support with the option to swap both anytime. This new mode will combine RPG progression with classic trademarks of Mortal Kombat’s known gory aesthetic.

PlayStation Blog expounds upon the new mode as a board game and RPG combo, with players exploring a “board game-like map” with various challenges to overcome. GamesRadar described their game experience as “a greatest hits of [Mortal Kombat’s] single-player experiences.”

Progression requires success in completing different challenges. Challenges will vary between standard fighting matches and maneuvering a “relatively slow bullet hell of sorts,” per GamesRadar.

Updates to the mode are planned to go live every six weeks, with new updates bringing new realms with even more nodes to choose from for players. Lead Designer Derek Kirtzic explains it as “...you basically go through the progression of all those islands of what we call ‘The Golden Path.’ Once you defeat the final boss, Scorpion, for season one, the invading force, then you can go from Z back to A through endgame content, using all the tools and things you’ve unlocked or acquired…”

Mortal Kombat 1 releases on September 14 on Windows PC, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 5.
