Neo And Trinity Return In The New 'Matrix 4’ Trailer

Matrix Resurrections.jpg

The last time we saw Neo was in The Matrix Revolutions, when his body was being carried away by the machines. At the cost of his life, he was victorious over Agent Smith, allowing the Machines to delete the Smith program, destroying the villain once and for all. The movie ended with the Oracle saying that she thinks they will see Neo again.

The Matrix Revolutions was released in 2003. Now, almost two decades later, we finally see Neo again. The trailer for the fourth installment, The Matrix Resurrections, dropped this past Thursday, following a teaser page which came out on September 7, 2021. The teaser simply asks viewers to choose between the red pill and the blue pill. Depending on their choice, the screen dissolved into the telltale green letters on black background of the Matrix before teasing scenes from the full official trailer.

The first official trailer does not disappoint. We open with Thomas Anderson/Neo (Keanu Reeves) sitting opposite his therapist (Neil Patrick Harris) in a therapy session as he talks about his dreams. The music begins as he asks “Am I crazy?” We see Neo questioning his sanity in his bathtub, and then his lingering handshake with Trinity (Carrie-Ann Moss) as she asks Neo if they had met before. The first line of Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit” plays “One pill makes you larger and one pill makes you small,” as we see Neo pouring out blue pills from a prescription bottle.

Eventually, he encounters a younger-looking Morpheus (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), who offers him a red pill and says, “Time to fly.” If anyone needs a refresher from the first Matrix movie, the blue pill allows you to forget about the Matrix so you can continue living in the illusion, while the red pill reveals the truth about the Matrix and the real world. Morpheus’ comment about flying and the scene of Trinity and Neo jumping off the tall building hark back to Neo’s rooftop jump in the first movie as he tries to learn the seemingly impossible physics of the Matrix.

Jefferson Airplane’s music is a perfect soundtrack for the epic return of Neo. The words of the song following the story of Alice in Wonderland parallels the same theme portrayed onscreen. Neo lays his eyes on a copy of Alice in Wonderland as a woman resembling the Oracle looks up at him, and he follows a blue-haired woman with a tattoo of a rabbit on her arm through the looking glass. The music briefly pauses and crescendos to the moment when Neo regains his powers. (Did anyone else cheer when they saw this?)

The first Matrix movie had been revolutionary in using the “bullet time” visual effect. It will be a treat to see what modern technology can do today. While we did not see Trinity’s infamous pose in midair or bending her body out of the way of bullets, we got a glimpse at Neo using his bullet-stopping power.

The trailer ends with Neo opposite an unknown figure in black suit (Jonathan Groff) as he says, “After all these years... to be going back to where it all started. Back to the Matrix.” We do not know what role he will be playing in the movie at this time, but it is probably a far cry from the lovable Kristoff from Frozen.

Keanu Reeves is reprising his role as Neo, albeit in his John Wick look. Carrie-Anne Moss and Jada Pinkett Smith return as Trinity and Niobe, respectively. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will be portraying Laurence Fishburne’s Morpheus. The aforementioned Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Jessica Henwick, Priyanka Chopra, and Christina Ricci’s specific roles have not been revealed as of yet.

There have been many changes in the world since the last time we saw The Matrix Trilogy. I, for one, am very excited to see what message Lana Wachowski will bring in the new film.

The Matrix Resurrections is scheduled for release in theaters and on HBO Max on December 22, 2021.
