The Nancy Drew series finale, “The Light Between Lives,” aired on The CW Network last Wednesday, August 23, to fans everywhere. It was first announced back in October 2022 that Nancy Drew would be cut from the network’s schedule after one final season, along with fan favorites The Flash and Riverdale. The series, starring Kennedy McMann as Nancy Drew, was doing well in rankings amidst Nexstar Media Group’s acquisition of The CW Network almost a year ago

However, Nancy Drew executive producer Larry Teng has now gone to X (formerly Twitter) to voice his concerns over how the production team found out that it would not be renewed for a fifth season. They almost didn’t know before the writers finalized the script for “The Light Between Lives” that it would be the last episode of not just season four but the whole series. On X, Teng explained that CBS Studios called the CW’s new executives because they wanted to work out scheduling conflicts for Kennedy McMann, who was cast in both Nancy Drew and The Good Lawyer the following season.

That call was the only reason CBS Studios found out that Nancy Drew would not be renewed for a fifth season when, according to Teng, the CW’s president said, “Oh, we’re not picking you up…the show is too expensive.” Through further posts on X, Teng remarked, “Had our Studio not made that call, who knows if we would’ve ever been told…What a f***ing sh***y way of telling us we were getting canceled.” He also commented that there was “no consideration for the fandom who support and watch this show. I’ve been p***ed at the upper brass of this new CW since November. They suck.”
