November 7th, otherwise known as N7 Day. If you don’t know what that means, it references one of the most beloved video game franchises: Mass Effect. In Mass Effect, N7 designates a human in the Human Alliance as one of their best special operations soldiers. The first series protagonist, Commander Shepard, was an N7.

Fans everywhere celebrate N7 Day, egged on by EA, and this N7 Day EA and Bioware are celebrating by releasing a new teaser for the next Mass Effect game. It doesn’t reveal much, but the iconic N7 insignia on the character’s overcoat is undeniable. Of course, without any further context, speculation abounds online about who that is and what is happening. If you were able to catch the countdown on  EA’s website, some text included the words “Epsilon” and “Andromeda Distress Signal Detected.” Epsilon might be a reference to the character in the trailer, as the YouTube title is “Epsilon.” The reference to Andromeda is a name drop for the not-as-well-received sequel to the first trilogy of the same name, implying that this story will somehow involve the Andromeda story.

RELATED:

Some fans already speculate that the character is Liara, though that is unconfirmed. The N7 designation is reserved for humans in the Alliance, and this character is clearly wearing the N7 designation, though they may be wearing it as an honorific. Others have pointed out that Liara T’Soni was mentioned in the Andromeda game, and therefore they think she’s going to be involved in some sort of rescue. The character’s demeanor comes off almost like someone undercover, and Liara’s role as the Shadow Broker could lend some weight to that. It’s hard to tell if the character is a female, but it’s entirely possible.

If you’re a fan of Mass Effect, don’t look at the video to give you any more clues about what happens in the next game, nor when it will come out. Fans will have to subside on the tidbits of teasers BioWare has been tossing out until more concrete information is revealed.

Happy N7 Day!
