Morbius Director Teases Sony-Verse Spider-Man Will Be Revealed Soon
So far, the Spider-Man adjacent movies have been a mixed bag, to say the least. While the Venom movies have their fans, the Morbius movie starring controversial method actor Jared Leto has so far been a critical bomb, scoring a mere 17% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it has been confirmed by the director, Daniel Espinosa, that the Venom movies are in the same universe as the Morbius movie. So that begs the ultimate question: which Spider-Man will we be seeing?
There have been three main Spider-Men in the last few decades: Tobey Maguire's, starting in the early 2000s with Sam Rami at the helm, Andrew Garfield as the Spider-Man of the 2010s, and most recently, Tom Holland put on the suit for the rash of Marvel films, and played the character more than any of the other two combined, with six to their combined five. Of all three of them, Holland's Spider-Man has been the most successful, not just financially but also critically. However, that doesn't mean that he will make an appearance in any of the Sony films.

It doesn't seem too likely that Sony and Disney would come to an agreement that would allow Holland to be in one of the Sony films. Frankly, it's amazing that Spider-Man made it into the MCU at all, though it's certain that a lot of money went into that happening. Beyond that, rumor has it that Holland is ready to hang up the web-shooters and be done with the character. But, again, he's played Spider-Man in six films, and there is undoubtedly some character fatigue there.
Tobey Maguire doesn't seem like a likely choice either. Nothing against him as an actor, but the younger generation would have a hard time seeing him as Spider-Man, which wouldn't be helped because he's currently forty-six years old. Spider-Man, by nature, is a younger character. He was first bitten by the radioactive spider in high school at the age of fifteen, so, as good of an actor as he is, he wouldn't be able to play a good young Spidey, especially since the films don't seem to take place twenty years in the future, which is the only way it would work. An older, world-weary Spider-Man who's been doing this for twenty years fighting against monsters would be interesting, though.
That essentially leaves Andrew Garfield as the remaining option, and it's not a bad one. He's still young enough to get Spidey's character down, and he wouldn't do a bad job as a slightly older character who's been doing this long enough to be a bit wiser. He'd still work as a youthful, wise-cracking Spider-Man. But, of course, the biggest reason Garfield makes sense is that he was in the Sony Spider-Man films, to begin with. Sony released two Spider-Man films in 2012 and 2014 with Garfield behind the mask, so he'd be picking up where he left off, more or less.
There has been some overlap that muddies the waters a bit. Hardy's Venom was in the mid-credits scene for Spider-Man: No Way Home and Espinosa did confirm that Michael Keaton's Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming is the same one in Morbius. However, Holland's Spider-Man is the least likely even with those links.
So far, we don't really know which version of Spider-Man we'll get. However, according to the director, we'll be finding out soon. Of course, it could be that we're all wrong, and the new Spider-Man is played by a completely different actor, though that would be a significant risk. Though, if you ask me, I already know who the Morbius/Venom Spider-Man will be. I'll bet my house on it.
