She started as a lieutenant in the New Orleans harbor patrol, became one of the mightiest beings in the universe, and was the leader of the Avengers several times. Still, she never got her own comic series. Until now! Starting this December Marvel Comics will publish a 5-issue limited-series titled Monica Rambeau: Photon, written by award-winning author Eve L. Ewing and drawn by Michael Sta. Maria, a newcomer to the Marvel comic universe. The cover of issue 1 is created by Lucas Werneck.

The character of Monica Rambeau debuted in October of 1982 in issue 16 of The Amazing Sider-Man Annual, where she was depicted as an ambitious member of the New Orleans harbor patrol. When she was trying to stop a South-American dictator, she got in direct contact with extra-dimensional energy. As a result, she gained the ability to convert her body into pure energy, travel across vast distances at the speed of light, and (possibly) become even immortal.

Seeking help to control her new powers she turned to the Avengers, who not only put her into their training program but later also made her one of their own. Becoming friends with Spider-Man, Captain America and the Wasp Rambeau was also the first woman to take on the name Captain Marvel and together with the other Avengers she fought against countless foes, both on earth and in outer space.

Over time she has lost her powers several times and regained them later and she also chose several aliases for her superhero identity from Captain Marvel, to Photon, to Pulsar, to Spectrum.

Since her debut in 1982 Rambeau has appeared in several Marvel comics, including two dedicated one-shots, but unlike other characters, whose powers were far inferior to those of Monica, she has yet to receive her own stand-alone series.

“Monica's character has a long history in the Marvel Universe, but she's way overdue for getting her own story told.", says Eve L. Ewing and continues: "I'm picking the pen up from the legend himself, Dwayne McDuffie, who put out the last Monica Rambeau solo adventure almost three decades ago. It's a privilege and I'm excited to tell the story in a way that both highlights her incredible cosmic abilities as well as her everyday, relatable struggles. I hope this will be a title that has something equal to offer to veteran readers and folks who may be brand new to comics.”

Monica Rambeau: Photon sends the titular character on a journey that will span space and time. When she is tasked with making a very special cosmic delivery, this seems like an easy job in the beginning, but soon becomes not only quite complex but also very dangerous due to a threat from beyond and a family drama. So, Monica not only has to put into use all her powers but go beyond them and find her true potential.

Like with many other Marvel characters the life of Monica Rambeau in printed form differs quite significantly from that shown in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so readers should not expect the story of the upcoming comic series to nicely align with what has been presented both on the big and the small screen. In the 2019 MCU movie, Captain Marvel Rambeau is presented as a young girl, who befriends Carol Danvers, who later becomes Captain Marvel herself. The Disney+ series WandaVision showed Rambeau as an adult and a member of S.W.O.R.D., the Sentient Weapon Observation and Response Division, where she was portrayed by Teyonah Parris, who will reprise this role in the 2023 cinematic movie The Marvels.

But fans of Rambeau won't have to wait that long to see this character again, as issue 1 of Monica Rambeau: Photon will be on sale starting December 7, 2022.
