A trademark for The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth has been granted to Middle-earth Enterprises. This trademark follows on from the recently announced Magic: The Gathering Universes Beyond set that will release in June and November.

The trademark for the franchise covers a range of things that could be done with a franchise, such as online electronic games, operation and coordination of game tournaments, leagues and tours, producing movies that can be viewed across television and the internet, virtual reality arcade services, and amusement and theme park services. While not all of that is likely to happen, it covers the bases for a new branding of The Lord of the Rings to exist alongside the current one.

Of particular importance is the part about movies, as it shows that Warner Bros. does not hold exclusive rights to Lord of the Rings movies, only to those that get a theatrical release. While no one yet knows what form a Tales of Middle-earth movie would take, there’s every possibility it would be an animated series to mark itself as a different continuity to that of the live-action films.

As for those cards, the Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth set is the first full set to release under the Magic: The Gathering Universes Beyond series. With it, players can involve themselves in the iconic world of J.R.R Tolkien in a unique way. The first primary release in June will see starter decks, boosters, and bundles arrive in stores. The set will also be available on the online game Magic: The Gathering Arena at the same time.
