Matt Reeves’s The Batman (2022) captivated audiences when it was released, hooking fans old and new with the meticulous plot and beautiful visuals. It’s a story that takes place outside of the main DC cinematic universe, giving it extra freedom. The sequel will develop Robert Pattinson’s Batman further, continuing the story. Plot specificities are being kept under wraps, but Reeves gave a peek behind the creative curtain recently. He delved into The Batman sequel on the Team Deakins podcast, bringing up his primary goal for the production of the upcoming film.

Reeves discussed his main production goal, explaining, “I have had so many wonderful collaborators to work with, and when you find someone who you love working with, you just wanna [say,] ‘Come on, please, let’s just keep working together … How much farther can we push it?’”  Reeves found something that works, and since it isn’t broken, why try to fix it?

He continued, “Like, I’ve been talking to [cinematographer Greig Fraser] about – I’m trying to write the next movie now with my partner, and we’re doing this thing – and he’s going, ‘Let’s just push it farther.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, that would be really exciting to do.’” Working with Fraser again means they will be on a similar creative wavelength following the first film installment; they both know what’s been done and what worked first-hand, so they know ways to proceed and how to take things further.

The Batman - Part II is currently set to release on October 3, 2025; this could be subject to delays considering the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes currently underway in Hollywood. The Max spinoff series The Penguin is scheduled for a 2024 release. In the meantime, The Batman (2022) can be streamed for free on Max with a subscription, or rented and purchased through major retailers.
