Mark Hamill Was Heavily Involved In Luke Skywalker's Cameo In 'The Mandalorian'

Without a doubt, season two of Star Wars: The Mandalorian, left fans very satisfied with the way it ended, and hyped by the many important cameos it featured. Season two’s cameos featured many unforgettable characters, from Ahsoka Tano to the immortal Boba Fett, but the one cameo that left fans in shock was that of Luke Skywalker.

Luke’s cameo was very unexpected to many fans, and to a lot of them, it was a dream come true. The season finale of The Mandalorian was the revival of Star Wars in the eyes of some fans who were disappointed with the sequel trilogy. What many Star Wars fans don’t know is that Mark Hamill was very well involved with young Skywalker’s cameo scene.

The Mandalorian’s visual effect supervisor Hal Hickel recently spoke about Mark Hamill’s involvement in the finale, and how immersed Hamill was in crafting the Luke many people wanted to see. Hickel spoke on how excited the entire team was to have Hamill come in and help with Luke. Hamill helped the actor stepping in to play Luke from day one, to crafting Luke’s performance in the show.

Peyton Reed, who directed the final episode of season two of The Mandalorian, was very on board with the aging visual effect, since she had already worked with something similar in Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man. Peyton Reed, as well as Hickel, were excited to work with the Star Wars legend, and crafting amazing moments with Star Wars' most legendary character.

Hamill’s involvement in the episode crafted the perfect performance according to many fans who believed the scene to show the true side of Luke. Many fans also claim that the episode also brings the all mighty powerful Master Luke Skywalker, showing his true potential as a trained Jedi master.

Season two of The Mandalorian showed fans what a fully trained Jedi really looks like, and how extremely powerful Luke was. One of the greatest moments within Luke’s appearance is when he defeats all the Dark Troopers, as it shows a fully trained Jedi cannot be intimidated by such things. The way Luke fights with the Dark Troopers, even shocking Moff Gideon, as if he knew who had come to Grogu's aid.

Mark Hamill’s performance as Luke can be seen throughout the entire scene, on a whole new actor. This a challenge for the Star Wars visual effects department. Of course, this is not the first time a character has been revived or rejuvenated in Star Wars. In Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Peter Cushing and Carrie Fisher were both brought to life, with their likenesses on the faces of other actors.

This time though, the performance is very well done. Hamill’s voice is so on point, even the voice, the way he moves his lips, and the face. I personally felt like it was Mark Hamill talking, and we  could actually see Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker after Return of the Jedi.

Without Hamill's input, it would have been possible to nail the attitude, the charisma, and the amazing person that is Luke Skywalker.  To many fans including myself, the appearance of Skywalker is not about how many people he kills, but the accuracy of the facial expressions and the gentle attitude that he has when he is at his best in the original trilogy.
