Mark Hamill Sits Down With CBS To Talk About His Life And Future As Luke Skywalker
Mark Hamill has held many roles over the years, from live-action to animated voiceovers. One of his most recent roles, the estranged father of a stand-up comedian and podcaster in The Machine (2023), saw somewhat of a role reversal to the role that kicked his career into high gear: Hamill played the son of the estranged father in the original trilogy of Star Wars, fan favorite Luke Skywalker. In an interview with CBS, the actor discussed some of his career history as well as the future of the Master Jedi.
The actor branched out to other roles during the time, particularly in musical theater. Hamill played Mozart in a stage production of Amadeus; the movie adaptation of Amadeus was just one example of how Hamill’s legacy as Luke Skywalker was already impacting his career. He said that while speaking with the director Miloš Forman, the man said, “Oh no no no no, the Luke Skywalker is not to be being the Mozart.” This didn’t keep Hamill down; while he was “disappointed,” he believed “all you can do is…go forward.”

In regards to a future as Luke Skywalker, Hamill explained, “Well, you never say never, but I just don’t see any reason to.” He continued, “Let me put it that way: I mean, they have so many stories to tell, they don’t need Luke anymore. I had my time, and that’s good. But that’s enough.”
