MCU fans were first introduced to Cosmo The Spacedog in Guardians Of The Galaxy. She most recently played a bigger role in the Guardians Of The Galaxy Holiday Special. Cosmo has always been a vital asset to the Guardians, especially in the comics and the recent video game. She plays a bigger part in the final installment of the Guardians saga. Cosmo’s voice actress, Maria Bakalova, talks about what it was like to step into Cosmo’s paws, and join the Guardians family.

Bakalova says that she did more than just voiceover work. She assumed that once the movie was filmed, she would go to a recording booth and record the lines. It turns out it was much more than that. She also did the performance capture, and she ended up spending more time on set than anyone else. She compares James Gunn to a Captain of a ship and that he oversees every little detail of production.

She and Gunn discussed Cosmo’s backstory behind the scenes. We were given a little bit of it in the movie, but it's essentially the same as the comics. Cosmo was a Soviet space dog and was mutated somehow by her travel. She gained psionic powers and then landed on Knowhere. The only real change is that Cosmo is a boy in the comics.

Bakalova even took some cues from Slate, the dog that was on set during production. She says that he “is a trained dog and absolutely disciplined, perfect, but if you come to him and start petting him, his eyes are changing for real.”

Every family needs a dog, and the Guardians are no different. Bakalova doesn’t reveal if we’ll see Cosmo again but is proud of where she is at the end of Guardians Of The Galaxy Volume 3.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Volume 3 is now playing in theaters everywhere.
