MAPPA Releases Trailer for 'Ranma 1/2' Remake
After over thirty years, this iconic anime is finally making its return to television as MAPPA dropped a trailer for their remake of ‘Ranma ½’.
Based on the romcom manga of the same name by Rumiko Takahashi, Ranma ½ tells the story of Ranma Satone, a teenage martial artist who becomes cursed, turning into a girl when exposed to cold water, and reverting to a boy in hot water. Because of this, Ranma finds himself switching between genders to achieve his goals while finding a way to break the curse. The manga ran from 1987 until 1996 under Weekly Shonen Sunday, producing 38 volumes, with over 55 million copies sold worldwide, making it one of the highest-selling manga of all time.
The series would receive an anime adaptation by Studio Deen, running from 1989 until 1992. Studio Deen would also produce a multitude of OVAs and three movies after the series’ conclusion. The manga and anime are attributed to making both mediums popular in the United States in the 1990s for their slapstick comedy and unique twist on harem anime. Many also interpret the series themes and protagonist as a thoughtful trans allegory, with the main character having the ability to switch between sexes.
