Maguire Vs. Garfield: Which Spider-Man Deserves A Sequel More
Spider-Man: No Way Home just joined a lucrative company during its second week of release. It joined the billion-dollar box office club. There have been only a handful of other movies in history that have reached that status. No Way Home is the first and only film to do so ever since the global pandemic started. That begs the question. What comes next for the webslinger? We are not directly referring to the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of the character. We are talking about all the iterations we have seen. What could come next for Tobey? Andrew? Who deserves to continue their story? How would each of them continue?
Let's start with the man who first played Spider-Man on the big screen, Tobey Maguire. He arguably starred in the worst received Spider-Man movie in the eyes of critics and audiences. There were cool elements in Spider-Man 3 but overall it failed to have the gravitas that the previous two carried, and ultimately ended up a dud. Social media had been harsh on scenes from that movie. Therefore, Tobey’s Spider-Man could use a solo redemption arc in his own world to see what has become of all the characters that surround him. Obviously time has passed since we last saw him so it would require a bit of finesse to fill in those gaps.

Andrew Garfield, on the other hand, got the short end of the stick when Sony decided to pair with Marvel and reboot the franchise for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We never got to see how he processed any of the heavy stuff that happened in the Amazing Spider-Man 2, and so many plot threads were left unresolved. It is my thought that Andrew has more range than the other two actors who have played Peter Parker/Spider-Man. While No Way Home provided glimpses of how he might have handled things, nothing quite compares to being able to see him moving forward in his own solo adventure. I think the easiest way to do this would be via a Venom or Morbius movie, and then expand upon it from there.
On the question of who deserves a sequel more, and solely on that question alone, I strongly believe the answer is Andrew Garfrield. Tobey’s Spider-Man had a conclusion, albeit not a great one. We left his Spider-Man at a point in time that we know roughly how things would continue for him. Andrew’s Spider-Man was smack right in the middle of dealing with the death of his first love, and the anger and sadness that would come with that. Also, from general press and social media posts it appears that Andrew Garfield loves everything about Spider-Man. This is not to say that Tobey Maguire does not, but he does not seem to talk about it as much as Andrew does in fun ways. We have all seen that video of Spider-Man street performer on a wall who is handed money, and when a mask is removed it is actually Andrew Garfield. How could you not want that man back in the role?
If you break it down even further Andrew’s Spider-Man was the closest thing to comics Peter Parker we have received. He was a nerdy science kid who could create his own devices with just the stuff he has. There was no biological component and no Stark Tech help. He was just a genius with his own two hands, building and relying on the science and the math behind it.
It would be a tough call to make if these were the choices on your plate. However, if it came down to only being able to green-light one of the two projects, it would have to be The Amazing Spider-Man 3. Not for lack of love for Tobey Maguire or Sam Raimi, but there was so much left unexplored with The Amazing Spider-Man that I just need to know how that would be resolved.
