Lucasfilm Just Trademarked “Skywalker Academy.” Will This Be A New Show Or Something Else?

With a franchise as huge as Star Wars, Lucasfilm's trademarking of just about any name is enough to fuel some speculation regarding would could be coming down the pipeline in the near future. Anything that sounds like it could be a title of an upcoming project is enough to get the fans thinking.

A couple of days ago, the trademarking of "Skywalker Academy" came to the attention of many people on Twitter. At first glance, this sounds like Skylanders Academy, the 3D-animated series based on the Skylanders video game series. But within the context of Star Wars, the words may conjure up memories of the Jedi Academy novels, therefore conjuring up the image of Luke Skywalker instructing Jedi students. Some fans have been wanting to see more of this, not just the destruction of Luke's Jedi Temple. There has been more interest fueled recently after fans saw Luke Skywalker take in Grogu as a student on The Mandalorian a few months ago. The gap between this and Luke's self-imposed exile is largely unexplored and ripe for stories.

But before we get too excited, we need to remind ourselves that the name "Skywalker Academy" might not even be for a huge project on the screen. So how did the trademark come to the attention of Twitter users? It was actually brought up by Jordan Maison, the editor-in-chief at Cinelinx who has also written a few articles for StarWars.com in the past. In the tweet from Tuesday, April 6, he included a screenshot of his search over on the European Union Intellectual Property Office's website. His caption for the tweet reads:

"Huh, well that's an interesting new #StarWars trademark... Skywalker Academy.
Looks like just for clothing items at the moment, so maybe just for a new line of athletic stuff or something?"

So Maison says that it could just be for some clothing items. But of course, that did not stop people from thinking a bit more of what they would like a title like this to be. Someone in the Twitter thread mentioned that they would like to see Rey training Jedi. Naturally, this seems like the next step in the post-The Rise of Skywalker era simply from an in-universe chronology perspective. But of course, there are already many other different onscreen projects announced to be coming down Lucasfilm's pipeline.

Someone else in the thread pointed out that "Skywalker Academy" was said aloud by Ahsoka Tano in The Clone Wars season 7 episode "Gone with a Trace." The interaction between Trace Martez and Ahsoka Tano is as follows:

"I can tell you've worked on starships before. That must have been some academy you went to topside."

"Yeah, the best."

"What was it called?"

"Uh... Skywalker Academy."

Of course, in the context of the episode, Ahsoka is masking the fact that she is a former Jedi, and she cannot help incorporating her former master Anakin Skywalker into her fake backstory somehow. It is a very sweet moment, actually.

So when you think about it, "Skywalker Academy" could involve any of the Skywalkers from the three different trilogies. Perhaps that may even be the point of whatever this ends up being. Even if it is just a clothing line, people can still identify with the Star Wars characters and say something like, "I go to Skywalker Academy," perhaps as a slogan of comradery between Star Wars fans. This is just speculation, of course. But whatever this ends up being, we may not have to wait too long. But as with everything, keep your expectations in check.
