Live-Action 'How To Train Your Dragon' And 'Hedda' Movies Delayed Due To Strikes
The Hollywood strikes are persevering as the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and the Writers’ Guild of America (WGA) show no signs of bending. With these strikes, more productions are being indefinitely paused. The live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon and Nia DaCosta’s screen adaptation of Hedda have joined the growing list.
The How to Train Your Dragon franchise is based on books of the same name written by author Cressida Cowell. The current cast includes Nico Parker (The Last of Us) as Astrid and Mason Thames (The Black Phone) as Hiccup. The expected release was March 14, 2025, but with the production pause, this could be pushed back. Hedda had reportedly reached the stage of principal photography before production was paused. DaCosta is reimagining the original stage drama, a play full of relationship conflict, mild tragedy, and social commentary.

The WGA is fighting for fairer residual pay in the streaming platform era, AI limitations, and increased pension plan and health fund contributions, among several other points. SAG-AFTRA is fighting for similar goals, aiming to better compensate and protect its members.
