We were hit with the bolt of news yesterday that Lin-Manuel Miranda has been cast as Hermes in Disney+’s upcoming new series Percy Jackson and the Olympians.  Disney+ was excited to tweet out the news on its Twitter account:

Based on the best-selling book series by Rick Riordan, who has also written the pilot episode, the series will focus on the demigod Percy Jackson as he battles evil with the help of humans, other demigods, satyrs, and various mythological friends.

Readers of the books will note that Hermes, while mentioned in Book One: The Lightning Thief, is not actually an active character in the first book.  Riordan explains:

“his appearance early on in the show is necessary to the storytelling. He explains they’re “adding new glimpses of backstory, Easter eggs, and other nuances to enhance the narrative while remaining true to the original” and it’s primarily why introducing Hermes early will make sense.”

Is Mr. Miranda as nice and friendly as he seems in his other work in Hamilton, In the Heights, Mary Poppins Returns, and Encanto?  Rick Riordan says,

“Last week, we had the absolute pleasure of hosting Lin-Manuel on set. I have, of course, been a fan for years, and we’d corresponded a few times since his son and he are both fans of the Percy Jackson books, but this was the first time I’d gotten to meet him in person. It’s always wonderful when someone so multi-talented and wildly successful turns out to be also a genuinely nice and decent person. Lin-Manuel is that kind of guy.”

No doubt, we will all have the pleasure of seeing this familiar mythological world come to life on its projected premiere in 2024.
