Life Day One-Shot Comic Coming From Marvel
Many people (including George Lucas himself) would like to forget the Star Wars Holiday Special that aired November 17, 1978 and was never rebroadcast. However. Other parts of the franchise have since included references to it, including last year's The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special. And earlier this year, the animated segment that introduced Boba Fett was actually included on Disney+ under the title "The Story of the Faithful Wookiee."
It does not end there, as it was recently announced on StarWars.com that, this November, Marvel will be putting out a comic titled Star Wars: Life Day #1, which will include four tales pertaining to Life Day. Writers include Cavan Scott, Justina Ireland, Jody Houser, and Steve Orlando, with art by Ivan Fiorelli and cover art by Phil Noto. There will also be variant covers from Chris Sprouse and Jan Duursema.

You can read the blurb below:
"THE GALAXY’S FAVORITE HOLIDAY!
Happy LIFE DAY! Celebrate the galaxy’s favorite holiday with a collection of festive tales from all across the STAR WARS SAGA! Life Day is the last thing on HAN SOLO’S mind when he and CHEWBACCA find themselves outgunned and under fire. But Chewie won’t give up hope, remembering the lessons of Life Days past and present. As for Life Days yet to come… well, they’ll have to survive the night first!"
As notorious as the original holiday special is, it is nice that the franchise is still playing around with elements of it in a fun way. The special from LEGO was a huge hit last year, and this comic sounds like it will have some stories that could make for good reads. They might not cover galaxy-shaking events, but they could potentially convey the importance of family, which we see emphasized in lots of holiday stories across various media.
The writers of this comic seem to be really happy about this comic. Jody Houser has said she's excited to be working with friends, and Justina Ireland has revealed that one tale will be set in the High Republic era and include Jedi Padawan Burryaga, a Wookiee Jedi introduced in the novel Light of the Jedi earlier this year. And according to Cavan Scott,
“With the galaxy’s greatest holiday approaching, it’s been great to add a little festive cheer to Han Solo and Chewbacca’s life, from the days of the High Republic to the struggle against the Empire and beyond. There are carols and parties and decorations and… blaster fights and sarlacc pits? Well nothing says peace and harmony for all beings than a slavering, tentacled monster, does it?”
While the other writers have worked on various Star Wars stories previously, this is actually Steve Orlando's first shot at Star Wars. Perhaps we could see his name attached to other stories within the franchise in the future. Here is what he had to say:
“Being part of this Life Day Special is a surreal, exciting moment in time, for this writer who, as a kid, would routinely watch Return of the Jedi every Sunday after skiing, and pour over the nooks and crannies of Star Wars lore. And nothing was more mysterious to me than the often alluded to, never rebroadcast, Holiday Special. To be able to celebrate concepts introduced there, not to mention to be handed the keys to the Millennium Falcon, is the perfect Life Day gift in of itself.”
Star Wars: Life Day #1 comes out November 17, 2021, right on the 43rd anniversary of the airing of the Star Wars Holiday Special.
