Kevin Smith Says He Wanted Nicolas Cage For His Episode Of DC's 'Strange Adventures' Before It Was Cancelled

Warner Brothers Discovery has been canceling several projects as of late, and it seems the latest one is the HBO Max series Strange Adventures. This series was meant to be a DC anthology series that isn’t quite as popular. However, Kevin Smith was approached to write and direct an episode of the series, and he chose to do one on Jimmy Olsen and Bizarro Superman characters. In the case of the latter character, Smith had actor Nicolas Cage for the role. Cage had nearly played the character in an unproduced 1997 Superman film helmed by Tim Burton entitled Superman Lives.

“I tell you all of this and the entire story just to tell you that the person who is — we didn’t lock it in, he wasn’t signed to a contract — but the person we were pursuing to play our Bizarro was Nicolas Cage.” Smith stated during the episode.

Smith had announced the project’s cancelation during an episode of his podcast Hollywood Babble-On. His episode would have focused on Jimmy Olsen and Perry White going to the Bizarro world and finding Bizarro Superman as a regular guy in an old Superman costume. Gradually, however, he would be revealed to be the story’s villain, as he remade his world to set himself up as Superman after reading an issue of the Daily Planet that had wound up in the cosmos. Bizarro forced the residents to conform to this narrative. However, Smith stated that Bizarro would have had a heroic turn toward the end of the episode and perhaps have featured a Superman cameo.

The project appears to be a casualty of the Warner Bros. Discovery merger, which also canceled the upcoming Batgirl film. Smith stated that the reason for Strange Adventures’ cancelation is due to the new CEO, David Zaslav, only wanting the DC content to be in the theatrical films and not on the streaming platform.
