Kevin Feige's 'Star Wars' Movie Has Hired 'Loki's' Exec Producer To Write Script
As Obi-Wan Kenobi once said in the original Star Wars, an eagerly anticipated entry in that galaxy far, far away has taken its “first step into a larger world”: Kevin Feige’s Star Wars film has found its writer.
Michael Waldron, executive producer and writer of the upcoming Loki series (scheduled to premiere on Disney+ in May 2021), has made a deal with Disney to write the script for the currently untitled Star Wars film, according to Deadline. The deal also sees Waldron returning to write for a second season of Loki.
Waldron’s other writing credits include the Rick and Morty episode “The Old Man and the Seat,” the highly anticipated MCU film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Starz’ upcoming series Heels. Waldron also produced the Rick and Morty episode “The Vat of Acid Episode,” which earned the series an Emmy award for Outstanding Animated Program in 2020.
If the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars are the crown jewels in Disney’s empire, they must have absolute faith in Waldron to bring him in as writer for such major projects.
Loki has been a fan favorite since his cinematic debut in 2011’s Thor. While Doctor Strange has never reached the same level of popularity as some of the other Marvel films, the rumors that the title will bring in previous Spider-Men Tobey McGuire and Andrew Garfield through its titular multiverse has certainly piqued fans' interest.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe would not have reached its level of success without the vision and passion of producer Kevin Feige, who in the mid 2000s envisioned bringing together the core Avengers lineup (which Marvel conveniently still owned the film rights to) for a team up just like in the comics, forever changing the landscape of blockbuster films. Other studios have tried, with mixed results and limited success, to emulate Marvel’s formula. In the aftermath of the release of Avengers: Endgame, and in the lead up to the release of Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker, it was announced that Feige would be producing a Star Wars film. While no details have emerged about Feige’s entry yet, knowing that Feige is a self-proclaimed diehard Star Wars fan and has such an incredible track record on the Marvel side of the house, there are plenty of reasons for fans to be excited about this.
Disney seems to be exploring every corner of the Star Wars universe, branching out from storylines directly tied to the Skywalker family. The Mandalorian proved that Star Wars can be engaging without centering around the age old conflict between Jedi and Sith. It also takes place between the original and sequel trilogies, a section of the timeline that hadn’t extensively been explored in the new Disney canon. On January 5th, Disney kicked off its The High Republic multimedia initiative with the release of a few books, including Light of the Jedi. This storyline takes place 200 years prior to The Phantom Menace and will be told across dozens of tie-in novels and comics and eventually tie in to the newly announced Disney+ series, The Acolyte. Meanwhile, the next Star Wars feature length film will be Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron, which, given that name’s legacy, could take place anywhere during the original trilogy or in the same timeframe as The Mandalorian.
So where does Feige’s film fit into all of this? As a die-hard fan, would he want to stick closer to the original trilogy? Would he want to do something completely new and unexpected? Should Star Wars fans read into the fact that many of Michael Waldron’s writing credits revolve around multiverses, and Star Wars Rebels introduced a similar concept in the season 4 episode “A World Between Worlds?"
