Kevin Feige Breaks Down Why 'Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania' Is The Beginning Of Phase Five
Some may have wondered why the Ant-Man franchise was chosen to kick off Phase 5 for the MCU. It can be safely said that we’ve found out, Baskin-Robbins always finds out. On a serious note, in an exclusive with Empire, Kevin Feige revealed the thought process behind this choice.
Ant-Man was introduced to the MCU in a smaller-scale story, focusing on family. When Scott Lang popped up in Captain America: Civil War, he was used as a bit of comic relief. The second solo movie was still a comedic ride. Ant-Man has a presumed role that’s whimsical at this point, and Feige is changing that up. He told Empire, “We wanted to kick off Phase Five with Ant-Man because he’d earned that position. To not simply be the back-up or the comic relief, but to take his position at the front of the podium of the MCU.”

Having Ant-Man go against Kang the Conqueror makes logical sense considering the setting. The scale and the stakes will force the audience to see the characters in a new light, but it likely won’t get too heavy since that would be out of character. It will be a proper balance for the tone of the movie.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania exclusively hits theaters on February 17, 2023. A Disney+ release date isn’t confirmed yet, however, if the movie follows the pattern of other Marvel movies, it should drop in early April.
