Mustafar, the world where Darth Vader was born...

The planet has always had an air of legend in the galaxy far, far away. The same is true in the real world from an out of universe perspective as well. Star Wars fans have known about its existence for a long time even before the prequel trilogy. The Return of the Jedi novelization detailed how Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader on an unnamed lava planet. Many wondered just what this place was. What were the great mysteries of this planet? Just what made the place that turned Anakin into Vader so special. Well, the planet Mustafar has a bit of history to it beyond its connection to the Dark Lord of the Sith. It is a very fantastical planet that Star Wars has chosen to develop beyond what was depicted on film.

First and foremost, Mustafar was not only the birthplace of Darth Vader, but it eventually became his home. First appearing in Rogue One, Vader's castle has become an icon in the new era of Star Wars, appearing in various media, especially in the comics. Here on the planet where he lost everything, Vader built a mighty castle, a fortress from which he would draw upon the powers of the Dark Side of the Force. It was built on top of a Sith shrine. With the aid of an ancient Sith Lord Momin, Vader had hoped to channel the power with which he could use to bring his wife Padme back from the dead. As the Dark Side of the Force requires the user to tap into his anger and hatred, what better place for Vader to do this than the cusp of his greatest defeat? He would try again and again to enter the spirit realm to to get Padme back, but it was of no use. At the same time, the local Mustafarians tried to attack Vader’s castle in their futile attempt to get the Dark Lord off their world. Soon afterwards, Vader would look for a different way to bring back the dead, one involving the ancient secrets of Mustafar itself.

In the Vader Immortal VR game, the player was sent to Mustafar to aid Vader in a quest using an ancient artifact known as the Bright Star. Once upon a time, Mustafar was a lush planet with various creatures and other forms of life. It was not until a Force-sensitive Mustafarian named Lady Corvax tried to harness the power of the Bright Star to resurrect her husband. The planet became consumed in the Dark Side of the Force, turning it into the desolate wasteland. Vader, of course, wished to find the Bright Star and use it to bring Padme back from the dead. However, the artifact was destroyed, and Vader lost another attempt to bring back Padme. All was not lost, however. In destroying the crystal, the player would actually begin the process by which Mustafar would heal and return to its previous flourishing form. It would no longer be a place of darkness and evil.

Years later, Kylo Ren would return to Mustafar in search of Vader’s wayfinder. He found himself in the Corvax forest, which was a result of the aforementioned healing process. Even though Vader was no longer alive, his legacy still remained on Mustafar. Kylo would fight his way through the cultists defending the castle, and discover the wayfinder, which would lead to Exegol and eventually Emperor Palpatine himself.

The planet of Mustafar has always been a mysterious place in the history of Star Wars. Over the years, its air of fantasy and myth continue to expand and grow as more information is revealed. There is no other planet like it. After all, it is a legendary planet fit for a legendary hero turned villain to make his home.
