We’re halfway through Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, and after the events of Episode 3, Jude Law sat down with Entertainment Weekly to discuss his character, Jod Na Nawood. This interview provided us with some tantalizing teases of what is coming next in the future of the character, so let’s break down this new information and provide a little healthy speculation.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Episodes 1-4 of Skeleton Crew.

It is apparent that Jude Law had a considerable say in the character of Jod. He notes that he was the one to add the character’s dislike of droids into the narrative, but also that he, Christopher Ford, and John Watts discussed his character’s background extensively to enhance the emotions and mindset Jod has when he encounters the four kids from At Attin.

Jod is revealed as a liar at the end of Episode 3, and Law states that he is a character full of contradictions. He is a survivor, being flexible with the truth to last in a hard galaxy, and is always in it for himself. But at the same time, he is also a dreamer. He is ambitious and thinks big, which got him into trouble as Captain Silvo when he failed to acquire the wealth his pirate crew sought.

Finally able to comment on Jod’s Force sensitivity (something Law has remained coy about for months now), Law stated something interesting: that Jod didn’t have a childhood. It was taken away from him, and he is somewhat confused at the naivete and inexperience of the kids, unable to understand them as a result.

Given all of these elements, does that support the long-held theory that Jod is a former Jedi? It certainly seems to, the dislike of droids, the connection to the Force, and the lack of a proper childhood seem to fit. However, it is equally likely that Jod may be someone whose powers meant they were targeted or who grew up in a harsh environment.

Episode 4 of the show had Jod mention the smoggy atmosphere of At Achrann reminded him of his homeworld. Such a place was possibly not ideal for humanoid life, given the poor air quality, but it also indicates that Jod knows about his home. If he was a Jedi, he would have been taken at a fairly early age and likely wouldn’t have that knowledge.

But, Jedi or not, Jod is a fascinating “ally” the kids and SM-33 have found. Law teases the idea that we will have to wait and see if Jod will prove a threat at any point, but based on the developments in Episode 4, that possibility is looking more remote, though still not a zero.
