John Williams Returns to Score 'Kenobi'
John Williams.
A name that is legend, not just Star Wars circles, but across all of American pop culture and beyond. Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, the Olympics. His music has been legendary, majestic, and wonderful. From pieces like Duel of the Fates, Battle of the Heroes, to the Force theme, and the Imperial March. He has done so much for Star Wars and for the world of music that many, to this day, may not know.
It was back in 2019 that John Williams did his last Star Wars film with The Rise of Skywalker. As of now, the finale of the Skywalker Saga. However it seems that maybe this will not be William's final Star Wars project. It was announced by Deadline that John Williams will be returning to compose a few pieces of music for the new Disney+ Obi-Wan Kenobi series, specifically a brand new theme for the show. Marking the grand return of the "Grand Master of Music" to Star Wars.

Kenobi is shaping up to be quite an interesting show and one that seems to be well connected to the main saga itself. One could argue that this Disney+ series is very much Episode 3.5 of the Saga, as well as a Kenobi stand-alone. With the return of John Williams, it sure seems that they really want this show to cut to the heart of Star Wars. Making this series very important to the grander story of the Skywalker Saga.
This series has been in the works for the longest time, first as a movie and now as a series on Disney+. We have longed for the return of Ewan McGregor in this iconic role, after last seeing him in Revenge of the Sith. This show seems to be a grand celebration of the prequels and those who have missed that era over the years. It should also be able to demonstrate how the prequels and originals truly work in tandem with one another, showing true cohesion with the Star Wars grand story. It’s going to be quite the day when this series finally launches on Disney+.
It will be interesting to see what Williams makes Kenobi’s new theme about. For the longest time, his theme was essentially the Force theme. However that also meant that Kenobi, as a character, didn’t have a theme of his own. So it will be interesting to see just what the new theme sounds like. What will it invoke, how will it feel different to what Williams has produced before. It will be wonderful for him to return to this character and give him a sendoff with his own theme.
Again, Kenobi really is so connected to the Skywalker Saga, it could be more Episode 3.5 then even just a Star Wars Story. It will hopefully raise the profile of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, contextualize things, give new meaning to things. After all, we are about to see Vader and Kenobi face off against each other again in this series. Perhaps Williams will want to score that moment again just like he did with Battle of the Heroes.
It’s going to be super exciting to see Kenobi coming to Disney+ on the day A New Hope was released back in 1977. This will be one of the most unique experiences for Disney+ Star Wars and for John Williams. Hopefully the rest of the show will live up to the hype and the music of the Maestro, continuing to expand the musical lore of the galaxy far far away.
