Jessica Gao Reveals Why Spider-Man Wasn't Allowed To Appear In 'She-Hulk'
She-Hulk has promised the appearances of many characters, known and unknown as she looks to represent super-humans through their trials and tribulations in the MCU. While characters such as Hulk, Wong, Abomination, and Daredevil have been promised, the Direct recently revealed that Marvel vetoed the appearances of multiple characters within the series. Jessica Gao opened up about the characters they were rejected and one major character that was denied as the web-slinger himself, Spider-Man.
Marvel and Sony have shared a complicated relationship with Spider-Man since his introduction in the MCU. As Marvel has evolved, as well as Sony, these restrictions have only grown to become more complicated. Sony is currently building a connected universe with the characters they own the rights to, so Marvel has become more selective in the appearances they allow for Peter Parker. While speaking to the Direct, Jessica Gao revealed:

"There were a lot of characters from the comics– we wanted a lot of the comics for characters for fun situations where we could bring in like a character and think of like funny reasons why they would be in legal trouble. But there were a lot of characters that were from the comics that we couldn’t use either because of a rights issue, or there were a few times where it was because Marvel… all they would say is that they had other plans. And that’s all they would tell us. And then, we tried very, very hard to poke, and prod, and get a little bit more information. Of course, they wouldn’t tell us.”
Feige and Marvel have always remained rather hushed about their plans as they develop their phases, though it is always surprising to learn when this information is refused to be shared with the creators themselves. Daredevil is a major character that Marvel has revealed a future for since his reveal in Spider-Man No Way Home and Kingpin’s appearance in Hawkeye. Spider-Man’s future is currently in question since his soft reboot with the end of No Way Home, though She-Hulk looked to answer some of those questions with their series. Also in their conversation, Gao responded:
"But I will say, the one MCU character that really bummed out a lot of the writers in our room that we couldn’t use was Spider-Man and anyone involved around– like in the Spider-Man universe. Because we had so many Spider-Man fans in the room."
There has been a lot of buzz about where She-Hulk fits in the continuity of the MCU. Slash-Film did a trailer breakdown that revealed it will most likely take place beyond Endgame as they have noted Hulk’s arm is affected by his snap near the end of the film. So, they’re plans for Spider-Man may have been during his conflict with Damage Control following the events of Far From Home where Murdock became his lawyer. Regardless of Spidey’s inclusion, She-Hulk is building up to an event not worth missing. Be sure to catch the series when it premiers next week, August 18th, on Disney+.
