James Gunn Wants 'The Suicide Squad' vs 'Justice League'

While promoting The Suicide Squad on the press junket, Writer/director James Gunn shared his thoughts on a possible Suicide Squad vs. Justice League movie idea. Gunn might be known best for the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise at Disney and Marvel Studios, but with him crossing over to Warner Bros. and DC Films, the loose sequel to the 2016 blockbuster Suicide Squad had huge critical praise and much fan support thus far despite that the R-rated anti-hero group has a mountain to climb to be profitable.

Later this year, Gunn will return to Marvel for the back-to-back shoot of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and its lead-in holiday special. Also, he will be directing The Suicide Squad spin-off series Peacemaker, which will be premiering on HBO Max in January of 2022. But Gunn has more ideas for the DCEU.

CNA's Genevieve Loh presented him with a clever idea of The Justice League vs. The Suicide Squad. Loh mentioned that fans would like to see the DCEU's two biggest teams go head to head. "You've convinced me. Okay," Gunn said. When pushed to reveal just how he would bring them together, he continued:

"I don't know. I would have to think about it. [Laughs] I haven't put any thought into a Suicide Squad vs. Justice League movie. But it's not a bad idea, you know. But I think I've got to figure out who the Justice League is first, because I have no clue. I'm in the middle here of DC, everybody's always asking me, 'Is Henry Cavill still Superman?' I don't know who Superman is! Who knows?"

The idea is great on paper, but there are a lot of logistic complications to be shared. Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman) and Jason Momoa (Aquaman) have sequels in the works for their solo franchises, while Ezra Miller (The Flash) and Ben Affleck (Batman) will reunite in the upcoming Flashpoint-inspired film The Flash. Cavill currently does not have a deal to reprise the Superman role in the DC Extended Universe, although there are rumors of cameos in other DCEU related films. According to reports, Ray Fisher (Cyborg) fell out with the studio over alleged misconduct he says happened during Joss Whedon-directed reshoots on Justice League. Fisher will not participate in the DCEU projects until leadership among Warner Bros. executives changes.

As far as The Suicide Squad is concerned, the film was a financial disaster at the box office with the $185 million budget before marketing and other contributing factors to the project. So that side of the DCEU is currently up in the air apart from the Peacemaker series.

But never say never, I guess.
