With the current Hollywood strikes showing no signs of stopping, upcoming television shows and movies are trapped in production limbo. Given how many fans are facing the possibility of beloved shows and films being shelved indefinitely, the question becomes of what will be available to view during the strike. Luckily for viewers and actors, SAG-AFTRA will sign “interim agreements” with “truly independent producers” allowing many of them to start or continue production during the strike. The only condition is that they are not to be affiliated with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.

A frequently asked question the Guild has been getting focuses on producers who have no affiliation with the AMPTP and how the “interim agreements” apply to them, if at all. According to the SAG FAQ page, “For independently produced content that comes within the scope of a strike order, the producer may qualify for an ‘Interim Agreement’ that would allow such productions to continue working during a strike.”

All work and services under the TV/Theatrical Agreements and related contracts are classified as “struck work.” Truly independent, non-AMPTP productions wanting to shoot under the SAG’s Ultra Low Budget Project, Moderate Low Budget Project, the Low Budget Theatrical, and the Special New Media Agreements may be eligible for an “interim agreement” that will allow filming to continue.

With so much labor put into keeping productions going for actors’ and fans’ sake alike, there doesn’t appear to be a shortage of what will be available for watching and streaming. According to the Network Television Code, is its own contract “and remains unstruck”. Under this code, non-dramatic programs such as game shows, soap operas, variety shows, and award shows are still able to be filmed and produced. For more in-depth details about interim agreements and how to apply for one, the SAG’s FAQ has listed its agaftrastrike@sagaftra.org for such inquiries.
