How The Comics Set Up The Status Quo Of 'Book of Boba Fett'
With The Book of Boba Fett out, many Star Wars fans are asking themselves several questions about the galaxy far, far away. The main question is, of course, what is the status quo of the galaxy after the fall of the Empire and the end of Jabba the Hutt. What is the state of the criminal underworld and all the various crime lords, gangs, syndicates, and other factions that once dominated the seedier sides of the Star Wars galaxy. In the Marvel comics, we get a good look at what the status quo of the underworld is during the time of Book of Boba Fett.
According to the War of the Bounty Hunters comic run it appears that Jabba the Hutt was the last of the great crime lords of the Hutt Cartel. In the comic itself, The Hutt Council, which holds sway and rules over the various Hutt Clans, is killed by Darth Vader himself, after the Hutt fleet attacks Vader's capital ship. This leaves Jabba as the sole surviving member, meaning that Jabba is at the apex of his power by the time of Return of the Jedi. He is the ultimate authority of crime, at least when it comes to the mighty Hutt Cartel, and perhaps even more as well. This is good synergy across media types where The Book of Boba Fett is concerned.
In The Book of Boba Fett we see a world without Jabba the Hutt. We can infer that Jabba’s death was a major blow to the world of crime. The Hutt Cartel was once the most powerful of the crime syndicates, now it has been reduced to almost nothing. Without any leadership, the Cartel is not as powerful as they once were. This is probably why Bib Fortuna was allowed to rule over Tatooine without interference from the other criminal networks or even the Hutts themselves, who you would think would want to reclaim Tatooine for themselves. This little tidbit in the comics has far more implications that one might realize upon initial reading.
Hopefully as The Book of Boba Fett goes on, we will get to see more of the underworld, beyond those affiliated with the Hutts, showing what life is like post-Jabba, not just on Tatooine, but around the galaxy. Are the Hutts even a power in the galaxy anymore? Who has taken their place in the hierarchy? What are the new organizations starting to arise from the ashes? This, and more, should really be explored in Book of Boba Fett, to set the stage for the sequel trilogy and beyond. This series is a real chance to expand the lore and really give some much needed worldbuilding to the era and the underworld in general, to really flesh it out and build that bridge between the eras of Star Wars.
So far, it seems that the comics have been the bridge that will bind the various eras of Star Wars together. With the sequels, prequels and originals as well as the spin-off "Star Wars Stories." All of it coming together, tying together, to make the universe a far more cohesive. Seeing these events in the comics, and then seeing the synergy between comics and the streaming shows just adds to the cohesion as well.
Star Wars is coming together with various comics, streaming series and other media. It's always cool to see the synergy between the various projects as the universe grows and expands. It’s great to see such a in-depth and varied universe coming together. It really makes for an immersive feeling, like a living galaxy far, far away.
