Here's What We Know About 'Beetlejuice 2' So Far
Just before the SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023, the production team behind Beetlejuice 2 only had a day and a half of filming left, but finally wrapped in November. The sequel to the 1988 classic Beetlejuice, aptly titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, will see the return of director Tim Burton and actors Michael Keaton (Beetlejuice), Catherine O’Hara (Delia Deetz), and Winona Ryder (Lydia Deetz). New actors joining the ghost host with the most include Jenna Ortega as Lydia’s daughter, Astrid; Willem Dafoe, a ghost detective; and Monica Bellucci as Beetlejuice’s wife. Justin Theroux is also on the cast list, but his role has not been disclosed as of yet.
In August, the production’s cinematographer, Haris Zambarloukos, mentioned how important the themes of family and human connection are for both the original movie and its new sequel. Zambarloukos wants the audience to think about how “...now it’s 30 years later, and what are the intricacies and the human condition in keeping a family together all that time, set in the craziest world possible?” We’ll see Jenna Ortega’s new character, Astrid, continue the mother-daughter theme alongside Winona Ryder’s renowned role as Lydia. Ortega mentioned that “she’s weird, but in a different way…” and that Astrid and Lydia will be butting heads quite a bit.

Michael Keaton and Jenna Ortega have both exclaimed that working on Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was “some of the most fun” they’ve ever had on a production. Ortega commented on the film's visual effects as well, noting that there isn’t much CGI and they relied heavily on practical elements. Even more recently, Catherine O’Hara announced that the song, “Day-O (The Banana Boat Song),” originally by Harry Belafonte, will serve a role once again in the upcoming sequel.
In the original Beetlejuice (and Beetlejuice: The Musical), “Day-O” serves as a memorable scene showing how the now-deceased owners of the house, the Maitlands, can possess Delia and her friends in an attempt to force them to leave. When it comes to Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, there have been some concerns that reusing the moment may cause the sequel’s downfall. As long as the song is used differently, it should be just the perfect touch of nostalgia for the new movie.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will be released in theaters on September 6, 2024.
