HBO Releases A New Trailer For 'The Last Of Us' Adaptation
HBO Max has finally released the first teaser for its upcoming series The Last of Us. Based on the hit 2013 video game of the same name, The Last of Us follows Joel, a grizzled and cynical man tasked with protecting and escorting Ellie, a 14 year old girl, across a disease-ravaged, post-apocalyptic America.
The series was first announced in March 2020 and green-lit in November the same year. Fans were initially skeptical of the series but reception quickly warmed in early 2021 when it was announced that Mandalorian star (and de facto TV Dad) Pedro Pascal was cast in the lead role as Joel and Game of Thrones fan-favourite Bella Ramsey was cast as Ellie. The series was filmed in Alberta, Canada for almost a year from June 2021 to July 2022.
TLOU was praised for its gritty yet beautiful storytelling and themes of loss, love, and survival.
The teaser perfectly depicts the sombre tone of the game, as the camera pans across ruined cities riddled with armed soldiers, impoverished and a despaired populace, all the while Hank Williams' Alone and Forsaken strums along in the background. The footage is dominated by shots of a run-down-looking Joel (Pedro Pascal) and an equally run-down, yet mildly hopeful-looking Ellie (Bella Ramsey) - both of whom have captured the essence and aesthetic of their characters to a 'T'.
The Last of Us fans will also recognise some scenes ripped right out of the game, including the heart-wrenching opening sequence, Ellie and Joel’s escape from the city in the game’s first act, and of course, a spine-chilling shot of Joel, Ellie, and Tess hiding from a lurking Clicker creature.
The Last of Us is slated for a 2023 release on HBO, with Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey to star.
