Despite the very bad reviews following the release of HBO’s new animated series, Velma, the show has lately known a growth in popularity and came to be one of the most in-demand shows, according to Parrot Analytics.

In Velma, we follow nerdy-looking Velma Dinkley and her foray into mystery adventures throughout a 10-episode series. As a prequel to the 90s Scooby-Doo animated show, Velma takes place before the famous Scooby-Doo gang was officially formed. To help her solve these new and deadly mysteries, Velma is joined by some members of the future group, such as Daphne Blake (Constance Wu), Fred Jones (Glenn Howerton), and Norville “Shaggy” Rogers (Sam Richardson).

Following its debut on January 12 of this year, Velma received a very poor reception from an audience that was certainly eager to see what creator Charlie Grandy had prepared for them. Many expected a horror-mystery show that would meet the original show’s writing quality. However, according to reviews, it didn’t; most of the show’s criticisms brought down the show’s meta-storytelling and its decision to swerve away from the source material.

Unexpectedly, while the show broke the record of the series with the worst audience score rating of 1.3 (dethroning Dragon Ball Evolution), the series managed to become the second most in-demand new show, according to Parrot Analytics’ data. The show scored an increase of 127 percent in the United States following its debut, a bit higher than HBO’s The Last of Us, which was released in the same week. On the same note, this week, Velma shows a viewership performance that is 37.3 times higher than an average series.

While reviews hold a certain amount of power when it comes to the entertainment industry, numbers certainly feel heavier, as the staple of the streaming platforms’ economy. As of this writing, we know that a second season is in the works at Warner Bros. but nothing has been officially announced yet.

Nothing can tell what the future holds for Velma, but that’s a mystery for another day. In the meantime, you can watch the first 6 episodes of the show on HBO Max now.
