Robert Pattinson Teases ‘The Batman’ Sequel
Warner Bros. has a lot riding on The Batman. It is going to reset the continuity for the caped crusader after the most recent iteration. Writer and director Matt Reeves has been tasked with bringing this version of Batman to life and Robert Pattinson has an even taller task in making us believe in this version of the character.
Based on plenty of stills, two trailers, and various television spots we already know certain characters will be in the movie. They include Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Oswald Copplepot/The Penguin, and The Riddler (who will serve as the main villain of the film).

With the premiere of The Batman less than a month away, it is time to begin speculating what the larger picture may look like. There is very little chance this was envisioned as a one-and-done movie with Batman being a younger version. Robert Pattinson has now spoken out about the future of the series:
"I mean, they always have that little bit at the end, that’s like: ‘...and coming up!’ But other than that, it feels strangely personal. I think people will be quite shocked at how different it is."
Pattinson has indicated there is something that could be built upon for the sequel. Whether that is a direct reference to a future villain will remain to be seen.
If they build upon the detective aspect of the character, there are plenty of avenues worth exploring which could include more street-level aspects with the mafia families. It would be very cool to see a mystery surrounding the murder of the Graysons in a sequel as well. It has been long rumored that WB is interested in bringing in Nightwing.
Pattinson did say this movie has its own unique tone so seeing it as a series was a little hard.
"When I saw it the first time, even from the first shot, it does feel incredibly different, tonally, to the other movies...And it’s so strange, and kind of... It’s sad, and quite touching. It’s a really, really unusual Batman story, and it almost seems harder for me to imagine it being a series afterwards."
Villains such as Two-Face, Scarecrow, Mad Hatter, and the ones who deal with the more psychological aspect of Batman seem prime to be used. Another villain that deserves to be redeemed is Mr. Freeze, who, like Riddler, could use a modernization that would make him more of a badass character. Batman has a plethora of barely used rogues as well if Matt Reeves wants to do a deep dive. If he wants to lean more into the detective side, then there are plenty of Batman stories that lend themselves well to the mystery genre. The one that immediately comes to mind is the Court of Owls, which could be a villain that extends over the series with other minor villains appearing in each standalone movie.
As of right now, it seems like the door is opened. The Batman is projected to make anywhere between $135-180 million on opening weekend, which would make it the biggest Batman film to date. If those numbers hold up it is all but guaranteed that we will get a sequel. There have already been two television series greenlit with Gotham City Police Department, and one focusing on Colin Farrell’s Penguin. A third series about Zoe Kravitz's Selina Kyle has long been rumored as well.
Batman is in good hands with this creative team and the idea of a standalone Batmanverse is very enticing. Gotham is a large place and the Bat-family is also huge. There is no telling what Matt Reeves has in store for us in the future, but Warner Bros. does not want to leave any possibility on the table moving forward. Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson seem to have a good working relationship as well so the future looks very bright for the man who loves to hide in the shadows.
