Greta Gerwig Is Now The Highest Domestic Grossing Female Director Of All Time
Ever since its release a few weeks ago alongside rival movie Oppenheimer, Barbie has been built up and nearly unstoppable. Recently, it has maintained momentum, and it took the record for highest grossing film directed by a woman. You might be wondering if Barbie took the record for best worldwide release or best domestic release, for now, the answer is just domestic, but it may have enough momentum to shatter those as well.
The record for the best domestic release of all time with a female director was previously held by Frozen II, which grossed $477.4 million, and Barbie recently passed $500 million in the US, becoming only the 20th film to ever do this, without adjustment for inflation. Barbie also just passed Captain Marvel on the international scene. Captain Marvel, which was directed by Anna Boden and made $1.128 million. This was recently surpassed by Barbie, which is now at 1.183 and climbing. It may also surpass the international box office record, also held by Frozen II at $1.28 million.
