'Godzilla x Kong' Director Adam Wingard Will Not Return For The Sequel
The MonsterVerse is bidding farewell to director Adam Wingard after the success of Godzilla Vs. Kong and its sequel Godzilla Vs. Kong: The New Empire. The latter earned over $564 million. Naturally, with those numbers, Legendary Studios was eager to continue the franchise, but the scheduling didn’t work out for Wingard. Instead, he will focus on an original project Onslaught which will begin filming in the fall.
Wingard’s departed on good terms and Legendary is open to welcoming him back for future MonsterVerse films. In the meantime, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings writer Dave Callaham has begun crafting the script for the third Godzilla Vs. Kong film. Wingard has expressed interest in returning to the MonsterVerse. He said, “There’s more story to this, and I think I have more story to tell. But it depends on how [Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire] does and how things kind of shape out […] I do have more story to tell with these monsters, and I know where I’d go with it. I would be very excited to be able to come back for another one if things worked out.” While Wingard will have to sit out this latest installment, fans shouldn’t give up hope for the director and writer’s return to these monster movies.
