Rian Johnson has seen his share of success in recent years with his Knives Out film. The first film has launched a successful franchise and recently released the sequel, Glass Onion, to much acclaim. It has since become the third most-watched film in its first ten days, reaching 209.4 million hours observed. The high number of watch hours indicates that Glass Onion is in third place, with Red Notice and Don’t Look Up leading. Glass Onion is also concurrently the number 1 English Language film for two weeks, achieving this distinction by measuring the first 28 days of viewership.

The success of a film on a streaming service is, of course, determined by the number of views it garners over a given period. The aftermath of COVID-19 has seemingly normalized the latest releases on streaming services as studios turned to them rather than theaters during the pandemic. Netflix’s longevity allows them to continue the competition. Time will decide if Glass Onion can attribute its success to the streaming giant or its initial success in its theatrical run.
