GKIDS Films Acquires North American Distribution Rights To Hayao Miyazaki's Last Film 'The Boy And The Heron'
Studio Ghibli’s latest offering, The Boy and The Heron has been acquired by GKIDS Films for North American distribution. The New York-based company has held the rights to most of the Ghibli catalogue since 2011 when it took over from Disney. Although they’ve not given a confirmed release date for the US, GKIDS has said that it will be later this year. There is no word concerning the distribution rights to other territories so it’s possible that the UK and Australia may have to wait slightly longer.
The Boy and The Heron broke box office records in Japan despite the animation company refusing to market the film, or even produce a trailer. Ghibli has a fiercely loyal fan base worldwide, so GKIDS is sure to have a hit on its hands, despite a lack of modern influencer-based media campaigns.
