The current release date for the How To Train Your Dragon reboot is June 13, 2025, after already being pushed back once in the wake of the SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023. It was just confirmed that Gerard Butler will reprise his role from the animated movie series to play Stoick, Hiccup’s father and chief of the Hairy Hooligan Viking tribe, in the live-action adaptation of How To Train Your Dragon. There has not been a production timeline or start date announced yet.

Some other roles have already been recast, seeing as 15 years will have passed between the original release of the first animated How To Train Your Dragon movie in 2010 and the release of the live-action movie. In animation, it doesn’t matter if there’s a large age difference between your voice actors and the characters they’re playing. However, the original voice actor for Hiccup, Jay Baruchel, is now 41, and America Ferrera, the original voice actor for Astrid, is 39, so they’re not going to be participating in the new movie as teenage characters. Hiccup will be played by Mason Thames, who was recently in The Black Phone, and his friend Astrid will be played by Nico Parker, who appeared in The Last of Us.

How To Train Your Dragon is loosely based on the book series of the same name by Cressida Cowell and was first adapted in 2010 by co-directors Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, who will return to direct and write the live-action reboot. After the amazing reception of the first movie, two sequels were released in 2014 and 2019. Since then, the How To Train Your Dragon franchise has continued its story with three shows, short films, video games, and even a live ice show.
