Fans of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire book series, the source material for HBO’s ground-breaking A Game of Thrones, rejoice! There seems to be an end in sight for those of us who have been patiently waiting for news of when we can realistically expect The Winds of Winter to be finished.

As we fans know, there has been no drought of Westeros-themed content to enjoy while we have waited twelve years for this book. We’ve had The World of Ice and Fire and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms to sate our reading appetites, and HBO’s House of the Dragon to occupy ourselves. During this time, Martin has repeatedly assured his fanbase that writing The Winds of Winter has always been his top priority, even while working on other non-ASOIAF material, executive producing TV shows, and editing anthologies. So, what is the publishing timeline?

Speaking exclusively, Martin explains, “I wanted to grow my books exponentially. When I started A Game of Thrones, I had nine point-of-view characters. By the time I finished writing A Dance with Dragons, I was up to 31. As I have been writing furiously to get this book done, at a rate of 100 pages every three months, I am now up to 3,600 pages and counting, as there are many more storylines and  77 point-of-view characters that come to life, most dying a grisly death, as I continue this journey.”

Publisher Bantam Spectra spokesperson confirms:  “There has been an algorithm that we have found most successful with these novels. The first two were published within two years of each other, then four, then six. Following this pattern, we are at the one-third of the waypoint in our schedule, which means that The Winds of Winter should be in bookstores by September 2047, 36 years after A Dance with Dragons.”

Well, kids.  Winter has arrived.
