'Game of Thrones' Prequel 'House of the Dragon' Gets Big Update

Welcome back folks. Today, we are bringing you a big update from the world of Game of Thrones.

Game of Thrones was one of those TV shows that just seemed to go from strength to strength and gathered a huge following. Each season would have people tripping over themselves trying to work out theory after theory about the slightest little plot point.

Based on the series A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin, the TV show went on to become one of the most popular shows ever to have been made. Despite season 8 not living up to everyone's expectations, fans have been chomping at the bit to return to Westeros. Before season 8 had even wrapped up filming, there were already talks of multiple spinoffs being in the works. The most prominent of which was the aptly named The Long Night led by Naomi Watts. This new series had even gone so far to shoot a pilot in Ireland. However, HBO decided not to take it any further.

Back in 2019, another spin off was announced: House of the Dragon. This series would draw inspiration from the book Fire & Blood and focus on House Targaryen. The news came as a pleasant surprise to fans alike, due mostly to the fact where there are Targaryens there are usually Dragons. Their House sigil is a three-headed one, after all. Add to that the character Daenerys Targaryen was one of the most of popular from the original show, so the choice to focus on her family does make sense.

In terms of actual details, we know a few things at this particular point in time. Whilst we don't know specific plot & character details, we do know the focus will be on House Targaryen at the peak of its rule. We know there will likely be more Dragons than you can shake a stick at. We also know some of the cast expected to appear in the show and that it is scheduled to be 10 episodes long for season 1.

It was also confirmed that the show is set to be released in 2022. However, people were skeptical of this based on seemingly no movement in production and the recent pandemic having major implications on the TV/film industry.

Thanks to the official GOT Twitter page, though, it has been confirmed today that production has now indeed started. The tweet came with a photo which seemed to be of a group reading and the caption "Fire Will Reign." You can see the tweet below, which also encourages people to follow @HouseofDragon for updates.

The series is set to take place roughly 200 years before the events shown in GOT, so it's pretty safe to assume we aren't going to be seeing any characters from the original show turning up. However, there were a lot of historical figures mentioned, so maybe we get to see different sides of these characters as they lived instead of from the stories passed down throughout the years by each family.

As the original GOT progressed and its popularity grew, the studio threw more and more money at it and you can see the differences between earlier and later seasons. It's safe to say that when it comes to this new show, money isn't going to be a problem, and it's going to try and hook us from episode 1.

Will it be as successful as GOT? Will it be better? Or will it be worse? Personally, as long as they take the time to develop the characters like the first few seasons of GOT, it has just as much of a chance at success. If it's just another attempt to cash in on a successful franchise, it could be in trouble. We shall wait and see.

Until next time!
