Funcom Announces An Open-World MMO Taking Place In The 'Dune' Universe
Gamescom 2022 opened with news that an open-world MMO game based on the Dune universe is in development, titled Dune: Awakening. The news came with a short cinematic trailer, wherein an unknown male character surveys the desert landscape of the planet Arrakis, shortly before being attacked by a behemoth sandworm monster. Speculation is already rife as to the game’s plot, with many speculating that the character seen in the trailer is Paul Atreides, the protagonist of the Dune series. But apart from the trailer and some survival mechanics, little is known about the game at this point.
Dune: Awakening is being developed by Norwegian game studio, Funcom. The company has already impacted the survival and MMO genres with games like Anarchy Online, The Longest Journey, and the Age of Conan games, which have received a cult following since their release in 2008. In addition to Dune: Awakening, Funcom is also involved in the development of another Dune-based game, Dune: Spice Wars, a real-time strategy game slated for a 2023 release.
As evident by the title and the trailer content, Dune: Awakening will be based on the Dune series, written by Frank Herbert in 1965. Widely considered to be the best sci-fi story ever written, Dune has been adapted three times, with Dune: Awakening expected to take cues and aesthetics from the 2021 David Villeneuve adaption.
Dune: Awakening is currently in development for PC, PS5, and Xbox X/S. One can sign up for the Beta through the game’s website through this link.
