Filmmaker Richard Donner Has Passed Away
Via Variety, we have learned that filmmaker Richard Donner has passed away at the age of 91. He directed many films and done a lot of television work, but to the geek world, he is perhaps best for bringing Christopher Reeves’ Superman to the big screen in 1978, setting a high bar for later onscreen portrayals of the beloved DC superhero. While Richard Lester eventually took over the production of 1980’s Superman II, Richard Donner’s cut of the sequel later saw the light of day in 2006. He also directed the cult classic The Goonies, which starred a talented group of kid/teen actors (including Josh Brolin and Sean Astin) on a treasure hunt filled with adventure and humor. Donner also directed all four of the Lethal Weapon films, with those movies being Famous among action films.
Donner was also involved with films in a producer capacity, often with his wife Lauren Shuler Donner. He was credited as an executive producer for various films, including the first X-Men movie (released in 2000) and the prequel X-Men Origins: Wolverine (released in 2009). Though Richard Donner is no longer with us, his contributions to film and television will be long remembered.
