For many Star Wars characters, there is a whole expanded universe dedicated to them. A character one sees in the background. Sometimes a character who has one scene can have an entire legend dedicated around them. Mass Amedda is no different. So here are some of the facts that only die-hard Star Wars fans will know about him.

Mas Amedda, to many who only watch the Star Wars movies, is the guy who stands next to Palpatine in the Senate and has huge horns. However, there is more to this alien that meets the eye. He is more than just the horned guy who sits next to Palpatine while in the Senate building. There is a dark and sinister side to him.

Grand Vizier

Mas Amedda, to those in the know, is one of the most (if not the most) powerful person in the Empire outside the Emperor. For he is the Grand Vizier of the Empire. Practically the second in command to the Emperor who commands the giant bureaucracy of the Galactic Empire and the day-to-day running of the government.

Sometimes, the ability to use the Force is insignificant next to the power of bureaucracy. Mas Amedda in several stories has actually been in some cases the superior to Vader, and even Tarkin. For he who controls the resources controls the blood flow of the Empire. Even the admirals and the generals are sometimes no match for such administrative genius. Of course, all that power stems from the will of the Emperor, and thus he does not have a power base of his own to deride from. Of course that does not mean Mass Amedda didn’t enjoy his position over some of the more powerful individuals of the Empire like Tarkin and Vader, always reminding them that he was the direct link between them and the Emperor, and that if they wanted to speak to him, they would have to get past him.

As we saw in the Aftermath trilogy, once the Emperor is dead, Mas Amedda loses most of his power to the warlords and military men. Of course, once those people are gone, Amedda is put in charge of a puppet state in order to keep the machines of government running as a transition from Empire to Republic begins.

Acolyte of the Sith

Mas Amedda is a bureaucrat at heart, serving as Palpatine’s personal advisor and aid. However, he also has a more sinister side. He is also in the know when it comes to the Emperor’s greatest secret, that he is a Lord of the Sith.

In the 2020 Darth Vader comic series by Greg Pak, we learn that Mas Amedda is in on what is happening on Exegol. He is part of Sidious' inner circle, even knowing that Palpatine was a Sith as far back as when he became Chancellor. He was in on the conspiracy. Something that only very few have the privilege of being in on.

In many ways, this again puts Mas Amedda over someone like Darth Vader, being so loyal to the Emperor that he is allowed to be in on secrets that the apprentice to the dark lord cannot be. For even Vader did not know about Exegol.

Servant of the Emperor

Mas Amedda, when one gets to know him, is a Palpatine loyalist through and through. He may not be a Force user, or command armies, or is even a masterful tactician. But his proximity to the Emperor and his ability to be his eyes and ears, holding the keys to his office make him a formidable foe. For sometimes the most powerful weapon may not be a lightsaber, or a Death Star, or even the dark side of the Force. It is simply a pen, paper, and the wheels of government bureaucracy that one knows how to navigate from.

That is something fans of Mass Amedda would know all about.
