Exclusive Image From ‘Thor: Love And Thunder’ Shows Jane Foster’s Return As Real Mindf*** For Thor

We are just under two months away from the release of Thor: Love and Thunder, the fourth solo outing for Chris Hemsworth as the Asgardian God of Thunder. The recent release of the long-awaited teaser, which showed Thor searching for meaning and purpose, ended with the much-hyped return of Jane Foster, Thor’s ex-girlfriend played by Natalie Portman, wielding Mjolnir and spectacularly suited up in Thor-like armor and robes. Now we have a new image offering a sneak preview into what is coming.

The image, which was dropped alongside a new interview with Waititi, showed both Thor and Foster (as Mighty Thor) together for the first time in eight years. (Yes, let that sink in. Thor: The Dark World came out in 2013.) It was stunning to see them both together looking battle-ready, especially with Foster confidently holding Mjolnir. It appears that Thor, Vision, and Steve Rogers are not the only individuals worthy enough to wield the magical hammer.

You Know What They Say About A Woman Scorned – What Happens When They’re A God?

The most interesting thing will be how things are between Thor and Jane Foster after all that has happened. Given the teaser’s promise of Thor’s continued story arc as he looks for something else in life to replace war and fighting, the arrival of his old flame is unlikely to be easy.

Taika Waititi, the director and lead writer of the film, who also manned the helm for the previous installment Thor: Ragnarok, has suggested, rather plainly that it will be “a real mindf**k for Thor”. After all, eight years is a long-time and for any couple to reconnect, it would be strained to say the least. Throw in the fact that one half of the couple is an Avenger, the God of Thunder, and rightful heir to Asgard, and the other half is wielding the aforementioned hammer and dressed just like Thor.  Now you have a melting pot of emotions.

What’s The Film All About?

As for the plot of Thor: Love and Thunder, there is not a lot known about how everything will fit in. What we do know, along with the return of Foster, is that the current Guardians of the Galaxy consisting of Peter Quill, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, Drax, Mantis, and Nebula will be returning as will King Valkyrie, Korg, and Meik.

More Gods Entering The Expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe

That’s not all. As you would expect of the lead summer MCU film of the year, there will be new characters in the ever-growing and expanding universe. We have Zeus, the Marvel character based on the Greek god of the same name and king of the Olympians, and the ferocious Gorr the God Butcher. Again, how these two all fit in with the plot remains to be seen. Given that acting heavyweights Russel Crowe and Christian Bale will be portraying these roles, it seems unlikely that they would have just one quick appearance in the movie.

One thing is for sure, with Waititi at the helm, Thor: Love and Thunder is bound to hit the similar comedic notes that made the previous films so popular. The term "rom-com" was even highlighted by Waititi, which is definitely a first for the MCU.

Possible Connection To Moon Knight’s Egyptian Gods?

With all this talk of Olympians, it is hard not to speculate that there could be connections between Moon Knight and Thor: Love and Thunder. After all, the latest Marvel Disney+ show has introduced the Egyptian pantheon of gods. Whether this will be explicitly explored anytime soon, is still an uncertainty.

Christian Bale is quite the coup for Marvel Studios, and it would be a shame if Gorr the God Butcher becomes just a one-movie villain like Erik Killmonger, the Dark Elves, the Red Skull, or Yellowjacket. A character called the God Butcher also needs some gods to butcher. Thor, Mighty Thor, and Zeus are already in this movie. Will we see Gorr turn his attention to the Egyptian gods like Ammit, Khonshu, or Taweret at some point? There is also Arishem the Judge, a Celestial introduced in Eternals.

Let’s not get too ahead of ourselves though. The full story involving how Gorr, Zeus, and the other Olympians fit into the MCU will be revealed when Thor: Love and Thunder is released on July 8th, 2022.
