Exciting Production Update For 'Star Wars: The Acolyte' Series Revealed

Many people are excited for the upcoming Disney+ Star Wars series, and The Acolyte is no different. This will be an exciting turn for the Star Wars franchise. The prequel series focused on Anakin Skywalker and mainly highlighted his time while a Jedi and not a Sith. The Acolyte could give us the chance to see a novice Sith in training. It will also be a “female-centric” series, which will also be a pivot from other previous Star Wars series, though Ahsoka looks to be coming out first. Either way, The Acolyte looks to be breaking new ground in the Star Wars universe. For the first time, a live-action show in the Star Wars universe will led by a woman, both onscreen and behind the scenes, as Leslye Headland has been tasked with leading the upcoming series.

The Acolyte is now set to start filming in February 2022, and seemingly to come out following the Obi-Wan KenobiAndor, and Ahsoka series. This new production start date ignites further interest surrounding a series that will be more removed from the existing Star Wars works already out there. The Acolyte will take place in the High Republic era. For those who have been experiencing that era in publishing, this could be a fun live-action experience. We know little about it so far, but it will be a mystery thriller presumably dealing with the dark side of the force.

The High Republic time period is when the Galactic Republic was at its height, around 300 BBY to 82 BBY. This period has begun to be touched upon in recent The High Republic novels, but it has yet to be touched upon in long-form cinematic media. While the time period pre-dates some of our more famous heroes of the Star Wars trilogies, there are possibilities that some familiar names could appear. Yoda would be present during the time period, and so would at least a couple other Jedi Council members. However, many speculate that this show is set to be focused on the Sith during the time period, and little is known about the Sith in this era outside of Star Wars Legends novels that are no longer canon.

The High Republic era is a Star Wars time period ripe for story exploration. This is the period where the Jedi order was at its peak, as compared to when they were on their downturn (less ability to use the Force) in the prequels and near absence in the original trilogy and sequel trilogy. And it’s largely unknown what the Sith were was up to during this period. We have some Star Wars Legends accounts in the Darth Bane and Darth Plagueis books outlining how things may have been. This new series could give us our first glimpse into how the Sith hierarchy would have been functioning behind the scenes as the Jedi prospered. We would be able to learn about their training practices as well as their numbers and galactic influence.

It’s the hope of many fans that this series will be able to give us the Sith’s point of view on Force training, as we learned only a bit about in the prequel trilogy. There are so many open areas to explore on the side of the Sith in the Star Wars universe. And being able to delve into Star Wars through Disney+ and the route of storytelling via television presents many more avenues for the storytellers to explore. No longer are they confined by a movie or the three-act structure. The writers can now spread interactions and discoveries over multiple episodes as well as include connections from other Star Wars pieces.

The future is bright for The Acolyte, with so many avenues in the Star Wars universe ripe for exploration.
