One of the most anticipated aspects of the new Obi-Wan Kenobi TV series was the knowledge that Obi-Wan would meet Darth Vader for the first time. Sure, their ultimate showdown was the highlight of A New Hope, and they had a spectacular duel in Revenge of the Sith, but regardless, it created a lot of buzz when it was announced that Hayden Christensen would be returning as Anakin Skywalker, and we’d get to see the first meeting between Obi-Wan and what his apprentice had become.

The fight scene itself did not disappoint, and it translated onto the screen the raw emotion felt by the actors as well. Said Christensen, “Getting to set for the first time, Ewan and I were just acknowledging that there was just a different feeling, and everyone in the crew understood the significance of the scene, so there was a real reverence for the scene that we were about to do.”

It was the first time the actors had worked together since Revenge of the Sith, and that added to the emotions of the experience. According to McGregor: “I think both of us felt like it was beautiful for us to be working again together. And there was something about our lives and everything that happened to us since we last worked together. It was sort of in the air between us. So it was a real…I don’t know if the word ‘meta’ is right, but there was something beautiful about that and it did. It took me by surprise. It was just very moving.”

Lightsaber battles are at their best when there is emotion behind the fight itself. Some of the most famous and emotional scenes in all of Star Wars have come during lightsaber duels. Another fight between Vader and Obi-Wan was a great way to leave things. Viewers could feel the pain from Obi-Wan and the hatred from Darth Vader. The emotions were there. And as for McGregor and Christensen, it sounds like they would have to agree.
