Everything Fans Know About Damon Lindelof's New 'Star Wars' Project
Over the weekend, news broke that confirmed the rumours of Damon Lindelof creating a Star Wars film, with new information bringing a few extra details about that project. So, what is known?
This project is set to be a standalone film that takes place after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, though is not a continuation of the sequel trilogy story. If the film is deemed a success, sequels of that story will be put into production. Such is the same design philosophy that went into A New Hope during its development.
RELATED:
Damon Lindelof has creative control of the project, which seems to have been in the early stages of development for half a year. A secret writers’ room for the project had been put together some time after this year’s Star Wars Celebration, where a two-week session was held in July to find a co-writer for the project.
At that writers’ room were Rayna McClendon, who is currently serving as a writer for Lucasfilm’s Willow series, and Patrick Somerville, who had previously worked with Lindelof on Leftovers, among others. Dave Filoni, an executive producer for Lucasfilm, had reportedly been in that writers’ room, too.
It was Justin Britt-Gibson, a writer who has seen his name on projects such as Guillermo del Toro’s The Strain and Starz’s Counterpart, who had been chosen to co-write this secret Star Wars project. Both Lindelof and Britt-Gibson have been working on the script for the project, assigning a director for the project to allow their creative vision to be present in that script.
Such a director is Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. Obaid-Chinoy has seen a lot of success with her directing of numerous documentaries tackling subjects such as culture, abuse, and identity. Having been interested in bringing her vision to Ms. Marvel and getting her wish, it seems Star Wars is now set to see that same vision applied to one of its projects.
With the script still being worked on, a release date for the film is unknown at this stage. However, among the upcoming schedule of releases for Star Wars projects are two dates that have no other information regarding them. The earliest of those is 2025. Taika Waititi’s untitled Star Wars project will be the first of those feature film releases, dated for late 2023.
