'Elemental' Becomes The Highest Grossing Original Film Since The Pandemic
Despite a disappointing $29.6 million opening weekend, Pixar’s Elemental has steadily gained ground in the six weeks it has been in movie theaters. Although not enjoying rave reviews from critics, this latest entry from Pixar is a family-friendly outing with beautiful animation, good jokes, and a happy ending that succeeds in getting its message across, using the four primal elements in a Romeo and Juliet retelling.
These points must be the reasons why people are telling their friends to see Elemental and why it is benefitting from the word of mouth in the box office charts. Instead of going down each week since its release, as many movies do, Elemental made $28.2 million in its fifth week out, almost matching its opening weekend earnings. As of last week, it has made $311.7 million altogether; this means that it has exceeded last year’s Lightyear, which earned $226.4 million, and even the popular and critical hit Encanto, which earned $256.8 million. It is on track to earn between $420 and $500 million at the worldwide box office.

Elemental could be what Pixar needs to get back on its feet in the post-pandemic world. Although there were other big openings in theaters recently, namely, Barbie, Oppenheimer, and Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning, those films are not meant for an all-ages audience. And even though it opened at a distant second behind The Flash, that movie soon fizzled and is firmly out of the box office weekend top ten list (and will probably be pulled from theaters soon, as it is already available to stream). Elemental has already surpassed Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and is now the ninth-highest grossing movie so far this year.
Disney CEO Bob Iger has admitted that sending Pixar movies such as Soul and Turning Red directly to Disney+ may have hurt the brand as far as theatrical expectations go, but hopefully, Elemental will be the catalyst to turn that around and have a Cinderella-esque happy ending.
