Edgar Wright's 'The Running Man' Remake Will Begin Filming Next Year

Director Edgar Wright, famous for his work on Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is working on another project, a remake of the 1987 film The Running Man, based on the 1982 novel of the same name by Stephen King, under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. The film and book both revolve around the titular show within a show, a reality/game show where contestants must flee from either the general public or professional killers, which exists in a dystopian future of the United States. Though the 1987 film, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, was highly successful, it was only a loose adaptation of King’s novel.

Edgar Wright’s new adaptation will likely be more faithful to the novel. Unlike the film, in which lead character Ben Richards is ultimately able to escape the show, the novel’s Ben has a much bleaker future ahead of him, though he’s still able to defy the producers of the show. Other details and plot points diverge significantly from the book and the movie, far too many to list here. Filming for the project is looking to begin next year, as stated by Discussing Film on X (formerly Twitter).
