EA Confirms 'Jedi: Fallen Order' Will Get A Sequel Game

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was a break-out hit in 2019. It blended tight controls Dark Souls-like combat, exploration, and an engaging story into one neat Star Wars package. It also offered Star Wars fans the opportunity to finally craft their own lightsaber which hasn’t been seen in very many Star Wars games. The game became a critical and financial success for EA and the developer Respawn. It was also an opportunity for Respawn to branch out and work on a game outside of the FPS genre, which they are known for, and it was mostly free of the controversy that surrounded EA’s other Star Wars games. With the game’s success, it seemed guaranteed to get a sequel like so many games with equal success before it, but there has been no word on a sequel until now.

With the game ending on a slight cliff-hanger, fans were anxious to learn if a sequel was in development, but despite a few rumors and vague statements by developers, there was no concrete evidence of a sequel. However, fans recently got their answer in the form of an EA earnings call. During the call, EA stated that they “will continue to invest in the Jedi: Fallen Order franchise.” While this doesn’t directly confirm that there is a Jedi: Fallen Order sequel in development, it does confirm that there is more Jedi: Fallen Order coming in some form or another. Some people have pointed out that the “continue to invest” part of their statement could imply that they just intend to continue to support it with updates and possible ports.

However, it doesn’t seem like EA would want to miss out on the potential profit from a new game. Conversely, and what seems like the more plausible option, is that EA not only plans a sequel but also potential spin-off games. The term “franchise” would seem to imply this since a franchise hardly consists of one or two games. With that being said, there was no mention of Respawn in the call, so there is the chance any sequel or spin-off could be developed by a new studio. It would make sense for Respawn to handle the potential sequel and other studios develop the spin-offs, but it is far far too early to say anything for certain. There have also been several fantastic games in the Star Wars universe that were one-off games, so maybe the “franchise” will be a collection of one-off Star Wars games that are all set around the time of Jedi: Fallen Order. This is, of course, all speculation.

There has been no other word from EA or Respawn. There have been rumors that Respawn is working on another single-player game, but this is, again, speculation. Admittedly, there is not a lot of other information on this, and the information from EA’s earnings call is vague at best. EA did mention before their EA Play event this summer that they didn’t plan to announce any Star Wars projects until 2022, so at the very least, fans won’t have to wait too long to get an update on new Star Wars games from EA. This will hopefully give more information on any intricacies that come with the apparent “Jedi: Fallen Order Franchise.” At the very least, fans can look forward to more Jedi: Fallen Order sometime in the future. Whether this is a sequel, spin-off, or weird continuation, it will still be great to get back into the Star Wars universe through that medium, and hopefully Respawn will be involved in whatever future Fallen Order projects are underway.
