This 'X-Men' Actor Jokes About A Return In The MCU

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is unpredictable in such a unique way right now. We are entering a new era of the MCU, one where we are being introduced to new heroes, organizations, and villains. The premiere date of May 6, 2022 looms ever closer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness with plans to potentially expand our already massive franchise of superhero movies into something unexpectedly huge and possibly connected to previous outings made by Marvel. The MCU has already teased the Multiverse many times. The cameo of Evan Peters’ Quicksilver in WandaVison suggests that Quicksilver may once again be appearing in the MCU. Characters are also traveling from different multiverses to meet and team up together, as seen in Loki and most recently Spider-Man: No Way Home. After No Way Home, Marvel is pushing expectations higher and higher with new ways to introduce characters into its bold cinematic universe.

The newest addition to the MCU, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has already teased new characters like America Chavez and Gargantos. It may also herald the return of some characters that have not yet been introduced in the MCU! The voice of Professor X, originally played by Patrick Stewart and then later on by James McAvoy, could be heard in the first teaser that played during Super Bowl LVI. This pointed to more of Fox's X-Men characters potentially appearing in the film like Storm (Halle Berry), Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), and my personal favorite Magneto (Ian McKellan and Michael Fassbender)

One member of Charles Xavier’s School For Gifted Youngsters has sadly confirmed that he will not be making an appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. James Marsden, who played the character Cyclops, has gone on record during an interview with Black Girl Nerds with a pretty definitive answer, “No.” However, he did express interest in seeing the meeting of the two universes:

“… I mean, that’d be cool to see those two worlds collide.”

Marsden also perked up at the mention of Cyclops and the MCU:

“Interesting. Oh now, I’m listening. Yes, let’s bring [Cyclops] back now 22 years later… right, what is the [Multiverse]? I mean is it, yeah… MCU.”

While Marsden may not be up to date on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it does beg the question: are Marvel and Disney looking for a way to bridge the two worlds together? They could bring the X-Men into the MCU the same way they brought in Daredevil in Spider-Man: No Way Home or even Kingpin in Hawkeye. Marvel and Disney may be looking into rebooting the X-Men a second time in the last 10 years with a whole new slate of movies that fit better into the current MCU.

The X-Men hold a special place in a lot of people's hearts. Both comic readers and moviegoers have seen many different versions of these characters. Marvel could stick the landing with a whole new cast of actors, heroes, and villains. Perhaps introducing the X-Men with their own movie could be better than having them appear as cameos in other characters' featured movies.

The Eternals recently introduced us to a whole new cast of characters and the cosmic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Why not do it again with… THE NEW X-MEN… maybe with a better title. I can’t wait to see what comes next for these characters!
